Rounding helps students make quick estimates and understand numbers in a more flexible way. It supports mental math and strengthens place value understanding.

Rounding to the Nearest Hundred (Lesson)

When rounding to the nearest hundred, pay attention to the tens digit. This digit determines whether the number moves up to the next hundred or stays at the current one.

  • If the tens digit is 5 or higher, increase the hundreds digit by one and round up to the next hundred.
  • If the tens digit is 4 or lower, keep the hundreds digit the same and round down to the lower hundred.

Example 1: Round 364 to the nearest hundred.

The hundreds digit is 3, which represents 300.

The tens digit is 6, which tells us whether to round up or down.
Since the tens digit is 5 or greater, we increase the hundreds digit by one and round up to 400.

So, 364 rounds to 400.

Example 2: Round 721 to the nearest hundred

The hundreds digit is 7, which represents 700.

The tens digit is 2, which is less than 5.
Because the tens digit is 4 or lower, we keep the hundreds digit the same and round down to 700.

So, 721 rounds to 700.
