Rounding to the Nearest Ten with a 3‑Digit Number (Lesson)

When rounding a three‑digit number to the nearest ten, focus on the ones digit. This digit determines whether the number moves up to the next group of ten or stays at the current one.

  • If the ones digit is 5 or higher, increase the tens digit by one and round up to the next ten.
  • If the ones digit is 4 or lower, leave the tens digit as it is and round down to the lower ten.

Example: Round 347 to the nearest ten.

The tens digit is 4, which represents 40.

The ones digit is 7, which tells us whether to round up or down.
Since the ones digit is 5 or greater, we increase the tens digit by one and round up to 350.

So, 347 rounds to 350.

Example: Round 312 to the nearest ten.

The tens digit is 1, which represents 10.

The ones digit is 2, which is less than 5.
Because the ones digit is 4 or lower, we keep the tens digit the same and round down to 310.

So, 312 rounds to 310.
