Understanding Place Value: Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Ones (Lesson)

Every digit in a number has a different value depending on its position. In a four‑digit number, we read the number from left to right as thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.

For example, in the number 4,382:

  • The 4 is in the thousands place, so it represents 4,000
  • The 3 is in the hundreds place, so it represents 300
  • The 8 is in the tens place, so it represents 80
  • The 2 is in the ones place, so it represents 2

When we add these values together, we get:
4,000 + 300 + 80 + 2 = 4,382
