These Order of Operations worksheets are designed to give students practice evaluating math expressions using PEMDAS.
Each printable worksheet includes a variety of problems that help reinforce the correct order of operations. They’re designed for use in classrooms or homeschool, or for anyone reviewing PEMDAS.
Answer keys are included with these order of operations worksheets on the second page. A mini lesson is below with an example similar to the types of problems in the worksheets.
What is PEMDAS?
PEMDAS is the standard order of operations used in math: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.
Worksheet 1 Worksheet 2 Worksheet 3 Worksheet 4Understanding the order of operations helps students solve math problems accurately and consistently. It ensures that everyone follows the same steps to get the same correct answer.
Order of Operations (PEMDAS) (Lesson)
When solving expressions, we follow the order of operations to decide which calculations to complete first. The acronym PEMDAS helps students remember the correct sequence.
P – Parentheses: Solve anything inside parentheses or brackets first.
E – Exponents: Evaluate powers or square roots next.
M/D – Multiplication and Division: Work from left to right.
A/S – Addition and Subtraction: Work from left to right.
Example: Evaluate 28 – (6 – 2)² + 4 x 11
Evaluate expressions in parentheses first.
28 – (6 – 2)² + 4 x 11 ➜ 28 – (4)² + 4 x 11
Evaluate exponents next.
28 – 4² + 4 x 11 ➜ 28 – 16 + 4 x 11
Multiply (and divide if present) from left to right.
28 – 16 + 4 x 11 ➜ 28 – 16 + 44
Add and subtract from left to right.
28 – 16 + 44 ➜ 12 + 44 ➜ 56
For more practice using PEMDAS, we have worksheets that are a step up in difficulty using nested parentheses in the expressions.
