Rounding to the Nearest Tenth and Hundredth (Mini Lesson)
To decide whether a decimal rounds up or stays the same, you look at the digit immediately to the right of the place value you’re rounding to.
Rounding to the nearest tenth
To round a decimal to the nearest tenth, check the hundredths digit.
- If the hundredths digit is 5 or higher, increase the tenths digit by one and round up to the next tenth.
- If the hundredths digit is 4 or lower, keep the tenths digit the same and round down to the lower tenth.
Example 1: Round 9.13 to the nearest tenth.
Tenths digit: 1
Hundredths digit: 3
Since the hundredths digit is 4 or lower, round down → 9.1
Example 2: Round 6.85 to the nearest tenth.
Tenths digit: 8
Hundredths digit: 5
Since the hundredths digit is 5 or higher, round up → 6.9
Rounding to the nearest hundredth
To round a decimal to the nearest hundredth, look at the thousandths digit.
- If the thousandths digit is 5 or greater, raise the hundredths digit by one and round up to the next hundredth.
- If the thousandths digit is 4 or less, leave the hundredths digit unchanged and round down to the lower hundredth.
Example 1: Round 3.746 to the nearest hundredth
Hundredths digit: 4
Thousandths digit: 6
Since 6 is 5 or greater, round up → 3.75
Example 2: Round 8.912 to the nearest hundredth
Hundredths digit: 1
Thousandths digit: 2
Since 2 is 4 or less, round down → 8.91
