How to Count Coins and Dollar Bills (Lesson)

Learning About Coins
Each coin has a name and a value.

  • A penny is worth 1 cent.
  • A nickel is worth 5 cents.
  • A dime is worth 10 cents.
  • A quarter is worth 25 cents.

Count coins by their value.
You can count pennies by ones, nickels by fives, dimes by tens, and quarters by twenty‑fives.

Learning About Dollar Bills
Bills are worth more than coins. 100 cents = 1 dollar, so bills represent bigger amounts of money.

  • A $1 bill is worth one dollar.
  • A $5 bill is worth five dollars.
  • A $10 bill is worth ten dollars.
  • A $20 bill is worth twenty dollars.

How to Count Mixed Money
When you have different coins and bills together, always start with the biggest value and work down.

Count the bills first.
Then count the coins, starting with the highest value coin.
Add everything together to find the total amount.

Example:
You have one $5 bill, two $1 bills, one quarter, one dime, and three pennies.

Start with the $5 bill → $5
Add the two $1 bills → $7
Add the quarter → $7.25
Add the dime → $7.35
Add the pennies → $7.38
The total is $7.38.
